CALLED MEMBERSHIP MEETING - TUESDAY, MARCH 6 at 7:00 PM, at ST. JOHN’S

Dear Member,

It is with great satisfaction that I write to inform you that the scheduled meeting with Mr. Ted Alexander, regional director of Preservation North Carolina, on Thursday, February 15, to discuss the future of St. John’s Church, was a productive and informative one. The majority of the Historical Society’s board of trustees, as well as general members, were present at the meeting to discuss options available to our organization for finding a new steward for our historic property.

Preservation North Carolina is one of this nation’s leading historic preservation organizations and has a well-earned reputation for saving and protecting significant pieces of this state’s architectural heritage. Alexander explained how the Rutherford County Historical Society can place covenants on St. John’s that will insure that all future owners respect and preserve the historical integrity of the building.

Following Alexander’s presentation, the board of trustees voted to spend $5,000 to cover the legal and professional costs for placing historical covenants on St. John’s Church. In addition, the board voted to move ahead with preparing the building for sale through Preservation North Carolina following a called meeting of the Historical Society’s general membership. That meeting has been scheduled for Tuesday, March 6, at 7:00 p.m. at St. John’s Church, 316 N. Main St. Rutherfordton, NC. PLEASE come to that meeting to share in the discussion and to participate in the planning process for divesting the organization of real estate, and for moving the Historical Society well into the future.

As I have said before, it is of greatest importance that we manage our assets wisely and safeguard our finances to insure that this organization reaches its 100th anniversary in 2035. Together, we can make that goal a reality. I look forward to seeing you on March 6.

Best wishes,

Robin S. Lattimore - RCHS President
